Document Purpose
A Business Case is used to document the justification for the undertaking of a project, based on the estimated costs (of development, implementation and incremental ongoing operations and maintenance costs) against the anticipated benefits to be gained and offset by any associated risks.

- Orientation to the project (including Name, Sponsoring organization details, stakeholder map and team Structure)
- Reasons for Undertaking the project
- Business options considered (and selected option)
- Expected benefits for the selected option
- Expected dis-benefits (drawbacks) to the selected option
- Timescale – over which the project will run and period over which benfits will be realised
- Costs – Project cost as well as operational and maintenance costs
- Investment appraisal – using three investment appraisal techniques (Internal Rate of Return – IRR, Net Present Value -NPV and Return on Investment -ROI)
